Kebanyakan pemandu pernah menjumpai lambang bateri kereta bernyala, dan biasa akan anggap bateri kereta kong. Lambang itu memang menunjukkan bahawa bateri kereta berada dalam keadaan yang lemah, tetapi ia juga menunjukkan bahawa alternator kereta gagal memberi pengecasan yang mencukupi.

Semua komponen elektrik, seperti penghawa dingin, radio, lampu, dan lain-lain patut ditutup untuk mengurangkan beban kepada alternator. Pencegahan?

Walau bagaimanapun voltan alternator rendah ini memang tidak mencukupi untuk mengecas bateri kereta. Oleh itu, pemandu akan silap anggap alternator mereka adalah baik, padahal bateri kereta akan kong tidak lama kemudian disebabkan voltan pengecasan yang rendah.

Sebelum teknologi kereta elektrik boleh menggantikan kereta petrol, semua kereta petrol dan diesel sekarang masih bergantung kepada bateri untuk menghidupkan enjin. Sebab yang paling umum bateri kereta kong:

– Litar pintas / sel mati dalam bateri kereta.

– Lampu depan, lampu dalam atau radio ditinggalkan “On” apabila enjin tiada hidup.

– Kekurangan penyelenggaraan bateri kereta, seperti biar terminal kotor, berkarat atau longgar yang mengakibatkan sambungan lemah.

– Penggunaan kereta (untuk tujuan komersil) yang terlampau panjang waktu.

Kebanyakan faktor di atas (kecuali yang pertama) adalah berkaitan dengan faktor-faktor pengguna sendiri. Penyelenggaraan kereta yang betul akan dapat mencegah kerosakan bateri kereta dan memanjangkan jangka hayat bateri kereta.

Most drivers have experienced battery lights on, and the immediate reaction is that the car battery is dead. In a way, it indicates that the car battery is in poor condition, but it also indicates that your car alternator/voltage regulator might be the culprit of the poor battery condition.

Many drivers underestimated the importance of the car alternator. A car alternator is the major component that supplies power to all car electrical components when the engine is running. It also needs to recharge the car battery at the same time. When the alternator fails, or the alternator belt slips, the car will fail to receive the power it needs. The car will in turn starts to draw power from the car battery instead of charging it. Thus the battery lights on.

Is it safe to drive when car battery lights on?

It very much depends on the state of the car alternator. If the car alternator is just low charging, you should have no problem to drive all the way to your mechanic. To do this, you will need to immediately switch off as many electrical components as possible, such as air conditioner, radio, headlights, etc. Do not switch off your engine until you have reached your mechanic. However if the car alternator is totally failed, you will still have the risk of engine stalling during driving. At that time, a tow truck will be inevitable.

Prevention?

It is always a good idea to periodically check your car alternator condition during your periodical service of your car. It is a simple process by hooking up a voltmeter to check its voltage when engine is running.

However do take note that a wrong alternator checking method will cause you a premature dead battery. Some mechanics tend to just do a simple test by removing the negative cable from the battery when engine is running. If engine continues to run without stalling, then they will declare the alternator is running well. In a way this method can only detect if the alternator is totally failed. If the alternator is just low charging, then this method will be ineffective. For example, when an alternator is low charging below 13V, the engine will continue to run without stalling. However the low alternator voltage is definitely not charging the car battery properly. Thus this method will lead the drivers assuming their alternators are working well, but end up with a dead battery eventually.

Until the next technology evolution comes, the current generation petrol and diesel cars are relying on starter batteries for engine cranking. When a car failed to start, most people will assume the battery is faulty. However, many car owners unaware that many factors can cause a dead car battery.

Most common causes:

  • Premature failure / short circuit / dead cell of the car battery.
  • Long car storage period / not starting the car for a long period.
  • Faulty alternator, faulty voltage regulator or slipping alternator belt which provide insufficient charging for the car battery.
  • Bad wiring which often caused by improper (non-factory fitted) third party accessories wiring.
  • The car has too many accessories installed. For example, high-wattage amplifier or “always on” dashboard camera often drains a battery if settings are improper. Electronic devices left plugged in at the lighter port or USB can cause “parasitic drain” as well.
  • Headlights, interior lights or radio are left “on” when engine is not running.
  • Lack of battery maintenance, such as dirty or corroded terminals which lead to poor connections.
  • Battery freezes under low temperature.
  • The car has extremely high mileage due to commercial use.

Most factors above (except the first one) are related to external causes. Proper car maintenance can often prevent such external factors. If the above sounds like your situation, do not be surprised when your car battery fails sooner than it should be. Take precautions and get your car diagnosed periodically.
